Some illnesses are not ignored out of neglect, but out of hope that they will pass. Unfortunately, Rheumatic Heart Disease does not heal itself. It worsens quietly, especially when care is delayed.
This is the story of a 16-year-old boy from the Sidama region who lived with Rheumatic Heart Disease for over five years. His family believed the condition might resolve on its own and did not seek consistent medical follow-up. Over time, the disease caused severe damage to his heart.
The consequences reached into every part of his life.
He stopped attending school because he could not walk without becoming short of breath. Nights were disrupted by difficulty sleeping. A young life meant for learning and growth became limited by exhaustion and fear.
After Christmas, that story changed.
Through the intervention of Healing Valves Ethiopia, the young patient became our 44th free life-saving cardiac surgery recipient. The complex procedure lasted more than four hours and was led by Ethiopia’s pioneer cardiac surgeon, Dr. Fekede Agwar, together with his highly skilled surgical team.
This surgery was not only a medical achievement. It was the result of global collaboration and unwavering commitment. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Healing Valves Ethiopia North America branch, whose tireless fundraising efforts including the sale of The Memoir of a Heart Surgeon played a critical role in making this surgery possible.
This story is a reminder of the cost of delayed care, and the power of timely intervention. Small symptoms, when ignored, can lead to life-threatening damage. But with awareness, access, and compassion, lives can be restored.
Today, this young boy can breathe again.
He can sleep again.
And most importantly, he can return to school and to his future.
